“But can you make WordPress stand on its head and sing The Star Spangled Banner in my favorite key?” There’s probably a plugin for that. With more than 20,000 plugins available to enhance WordPress functionality, we’ve learned that if two or more users have shared a WordPress need or desire, there’s probably a free plugin they can upload to do the job. Learn how to find, upload, and evaluate WordPress plugins, beginning with a few of our favorites.
We’ll begin by looking at the plugins that come standard with WordPress and then install several plugins we’ve come to know and love. We’ll take a look at your particular needs and conduct a little research to help you learn to access and review available WordPress plugins to meet those needs. And we’ll talk about how plugins do not always play nicely together and what to do about that.
|What other offerings relate to this one?||We believe it’s best to begin at the beginning – in this case with “Intro to WordPress: First Steps.” We also recommend “Intro to WordPress: Part Two (Going Deeper)” as preparation for this lab. You may want to complete this lab before you get to attend our other labs because adding plugins directly relates to many of the other tasks you’ll want to tackle.
|Who should attend?||Those who have their basic website up and running, and need to make it do something outside of the canned functionality, or just want to get a feel for how deep is the WordPress rabbit hole!|
|What’s the process?||We’ll get to know you and your aims first. We’ll spend some time clarifying the basic landscape of plugins. Then, we’ll jump on our laptops to download some of our must-have plugins and explore their use, learn how to find the functionality/plugin you’re looking for, how to upload and activate it, and how to test and evaluate it.
|What does it cost and what’s included?||$35 includes the workshop, hand-outs, and coffee (or tea).|
|How long does it last?||Two (2) hours. Come up to thirty minutes early for coffee and bonding, and to set up your laptop. And, stay up to thirty minutes afterward for networking.|
|What do you need to bring?||An open mind; ideas about what you’d like your website to do; and, your favorite coffee cup if you’d like.|
