While I develop and build WordPress websites, and coach clients too, I’m always quick to say I am not an SEO (Search Engine Optimization) expert. I know it’s a full time job, and it’s not where I want to put my focus. Yes, I can offer suggestions in how to optimize your website – read this. And, I have a bit of knowledge about SEO, and I use a plugin to enhance SEO in WordPress sites. Employing this plugin also educates me as I use it – and it’s fun too! I also know that SEO needs to be considered from the very beginning of the web design project. But, again, I’m no SEO expert. Unfortunately, there are many web designers and developers who know nothing about SEO.

I came across a post about when you’re choosing a web designer and are checking to see if they know anything about SEO that, while a bit dated, makes good points that are still valid.

I’d say that the quickest way you can determine this is if when you start querying them about SEO concerns, they say any of the following:

• “SEO can be done effectively after the design process is completed.”
• “SEO is easy. We do it all the time.”
• “SEO is as complicated as web design and I don’t think you’ll understand what we do even if I explain it to you.”
• “I guarantee you that if we do your design, you’ll rank #1.”

If they do, you’d better keep interviewing!
